What is better, Bi-Folds or Patio Doors?2025-09-03T09:23:03+00:00

Bifold vs Sliding Doors: What Works Best?

Let’s break it down based on key factors:

1. View & Access

Bifold doors offer a virtually unobstructed opening when fully folded—perfect for blending indoor and outdoor spaces seamlessly.

Sliding doors provide excellent views when closed thanks to slim frames and larger panes, although one panel always overlaps.

2. Thermal Efficiency

Sliding doors typically offer better insulation as they have fewer seals and large glass spans.

High-quality bifold systems with modern thermal breaks can match sliding doors but often require more maintenance.

3. Space & Layout

Sliding doors save floor space—they glide along tracks and are ideal where clearance is limited.

Bifold doors need space on one side for folding. Still, they’re highly flexible in configuration—including remote corners or large expanses.

4. Ease of Use & Accessibility

Sliding systems are smooth and simple to operate, even in tight spaces.

Bifold doors often include a designated “traffic” leaf for quick access and are generally more wheelchair-friendly due to low thresholds.

5. Security & Maintenance

Bifold doors typically offer multiple locking points (at hinges), which can make them more secure.

Both door types require proper installation and periodic maintenance—bifolds may need more adjustment over time due to their more complex mechanics.

6. Cost Considerations

No clear winner: Sliding doors can be more expensive when large glass panes are needed.

Bifold doors may be cost-effective for spanning wide openings but can also be pricier if heavily customized.

❓ What is Part L?2025-09-03T09:16:00+00:00

❓ What is Part L?

Part L refers to a section of the UK Building Regulations that deals with the conservation of fuel and power in buildings.

It sets the standards for the energy performance of new and existing buildings.

For glazing, this mainly covers thermal efficiency requirements (U-values, g-values, and overall energy performance of windows, doors, and curtain walling).

The goal is to reduce carbon emissions and ensure buildings are energy efficient.

✅ Why it matters for glazing

Products must meet specific U-value targets (a measure of heat loss).

Installations need to comply with Part L 2021 (England), which has stricter standards than before.

Ensures homeowners and businesses benefit from lower energy bills and a more sustainable building.

What is PAS 24?2025-09-03T09:13:50+00:00

❓ What is PAS 24?

PAS 24 is a UK standard that sets out the minimum security requirements for doors and windows.

It stands for “Publicly Available Specification 24”, created by the British Standards Institution (BSI).

It tests products for resistance against common burglary methods such as forced entry using tools, physical attacks, or attempts to manipulate locks.

A product that is PAS 24 certified has been independently tested and proven to meet these requirements.

✅ Why it matters

Peace of mind: Shows the product has been tested for real-world break-in scenarios.

Compliance: PAS 24 is often required to meet Building Regulations (Approved Document Q) for new-build homes.

Insurance: Some insurers may specify PAS 24 products as part of their security conditions.
