Terminology:

General:

  • V.F.O – Viewed from outside
  • Mitre – An angled cut
  • Add on / Knock on / Extension / A/O / Ext. – Profile added around the frame for trickle vents or clearance for plaster lines
  • Threshold – Bottom of door
  • Jamb – Sides of an item
  • Co-Ex Bead / Knock in Bead – Bead with gasket fitted in from Supplier (Fitter friendly)
  • Fan light – Small opening top hung
  • Concealed drainage – Drainage holes that are not visible, water drains through the bottom of the cill
  • Face drainage – Drainage holes will be visible in the bottom of the frame 
  • Clear opening – The clear space when a sash is open, taking into account any hardware protruding
  • Trickle Vent – An accessory fitted in the frame, or head extension to give ventilation into a room

Profiles:

  • Frame – Outer frame fixed into brickwork
  • Sash – Opening part of a door / window
  • Dummy sash – The above, but fixed shut to replicate the look of an opening sash
  • Transom – Horizontal bar dividing panels
  • Mullion – Vertical bar dividing panels
  • Glazing Bead – Profile used to hold the glass in place
  • Cill – Optional profile at bottom of window used for drainage
  • Coupler – to join frames together
  • Dummy transom – A fixed bar through a sash creating separate glass units within 1 opener
  • Floating mullion – a mullion that opens with a sash on a casement window (like French Door)
  • Midrail – Horizontal bar in a door (i.e. where a letterplate can be fitted)

Glazing:

  • Wedge Gasket – Used after fitting the glass, to create a ‘wedge/seal’ around the glass. It is always fitted on the inside, & is the only gasket not fitted in the factory.
  • If items are Internally glazed, with Co-Ex beads, wedge gaskets are not required. However, externally glazed items with Co-Ex bead, still require a wedge gasket to the inside.
  • Astragal bars – Glazing bars applied to the outside of the glass (bars supplied by fabricator) with duplex bars inside the glass
  • Georgian bars – Glazing bars inside the glass unit (from the glass supplier)
  • TX / TSG / Tuff – Toughened glass (shatters into small pieces rather than large shards)
  • TGU – Triple Glazed Unit
  • DGU – Double Glazed Unit
  • Warm Edge spacer / Thermobar – Bar that goes round the perimeter of a glass unit used for thermal properties

Hardware:

  • Stay – Friction stay hinge for casement window (window will stay in place without swinging open or shut) available as standard, egress or restricted
  • Keep – A component that the lock, locks into
  • Espagnolette – A type of lock for casement windows
  • Finger bolts – Locking components used on slave doors (Heritage / Smartwall / Aluspace)
  • Blanking Plate – a component used when a handle isn’t required on the outside of a door (i.e. Juliet Balcony)
  • Mag Lock – A surface mounted part for access control, usually operated with a keypad & push to exit button
  • Electric Strike – A type of keep used on commercial doors to release the lock to restrict access (i.e. Flats) buzz entry system/ keypads / cards
  • Panic Bar / Push Pad / Push bar – Fire escape hardware used on Smartwall commercial doors
  • Cylinder – Locking barrel operated by a key (Sizes vary per system)
  • Multipoint lock – A lock with multiple locking points, used on residential doors with a lever/lever
  • Butt Hinge – an inline hinge that can be used on windows & doors
  • Flag hinge – a bulkier hinge used on doors
  • Peg Stay – used with butt hinges
  • Folding Opener – a bar fitted to open & close a window with restricted opening, no need for handles or locks (usually used in schools)
  • Teleflex – Used on high level windows (no handles or locks required) Teleflex gearing to be sourced by others – must use butt hinges
  • Inline Handle – Straight window handles
  • Cranked Handle – Offset handles for windows
  • Pole Handle – Long stainless steel handles used on doors (available in different lengths, non-operable handles – must use with a separate cylinder & escutcheon)
  • Lever / Lever Handle – Used with a multipoint lock on doors
  • Shootbolt Handle – used on bi-fold doors between a pair of sashes (rods locking top & bottom into the frame)
  • Escutcheon – plate to go around the cylinder / keyhole
  • Door closer – Concealed closer used on commercial Smartwall doors (available as Hold open, Non hold open or Springless)
  • Hook Lock – A single lock operated by a key on commercial Smartwall doors
  • Drainage caps – Always use cap with flap – ACGSL045 (Black or White only)
